The subject matter of Haiku poetry often reflects the casual coexistence of seemingly unrelated phenomena. The castanet rhythms of Southern Spain and the metric structure of this originally Japanese form of poetry are combined in Andalusian Haiku. The 17 syllable three-line structure that is characteristic of haiku is often stated in successive lines of five, seven, and five, seven, and five syllables each. This is expressed in this piece as three successive measures of beats. The beginning of each measure is accented.
