Tides was composed as the result of an experience that occurred during a commercial turboprop airplane flight in which I found myself able to selectively perceive an assortment of melodies and ensemble sounds from the white noise produced by the airplane engines. I recalled a similar experience on an ocean front beach while listening to the surf. If the listening is casual and if attention is not being paid to the sound, it might seem to be static. But with some attention, and perhaps a bit of imagination, the effect – the perception of melodies, voices, instruments and more emerging from the white noise – can be experienced. In Tides the music is never static. It is at all times evolving into new shades of sound until listeners are finally awakened from the music at its conclusion.
