This Is Not A Sonata

Not a Sonata’ is highly worthwhile to perform in recitals, with interesting harmonic and rhythmic concepts and a variety of technical and musical challenges.

Davies moved to Los Angeles from his native Australia in the fall of 1998 to study film scoring at the University of Southern California. While at USC he sought out composer/arranger/band leader John Clayton and asked for an arranging lesson.

This one is sure to be popular for recital programs The movement titles familiar to every percussionist are ‘This is Not a Rhythm Song’, ‘This is Not a Violin Concerto’, and ‘This is Not a Mexican Dance’. However, Davies has not written a spoof of any of the mentioned works; rather, the titles are a tribute, albeit a somewhat ironic one, to the popularity of the pieces named. Leaving the titles aside, ‘Not a Sonata’ is highly worthwhile to perform, with interesting harmonic and rhythmic concepts and a variety of technical and musical challenges.
