Quartz City is another winner — literally. Johnson’s piece won first prize in the 1995 P.A.S.Composition Contest. The vibraphone solo is very challenging; the ensemble parts somewhat less so. This might be an excellent choice for a guest artist to perform with a student percussion ensemble. In Quartz City, the composer evokes the sounds of LA, the “City of Quartz,” with jazz, Mexican marimbas and Chinese gongs.
