William Cahn joined the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra as principal percussionist after graduating form the Eastman School of Music in 1968.

The original percussion ensemble version of Night Ride was completed in August 2005 and was dedicated to Kazunori Meguro and the students at Showa Academy of the Arts in Atsugi, Japan. It was scored for solo timpanist and four percussionists playing two marimbas, a vibraphone, tuned gongs, a glockenspiel and a suspended cymbal. The orchestration was completed in September 2007 and the concert band arrangement was made in May 2010. About the music, the composer offers the following verse.
