Cottontail rabbits are commonly found throughout North and South America. They have been the subjects of many books, stories and drawings, including famous tales such as Peter Rabbit and Peter Cottontail, and, of course, the mythical Easter Bunny. They are shy creatures, but also known for their speed and jumping ability.
Although I have arranged and performed a great many pieces from the novelty era of 1920s popular music, this is my first composition in that style. Cottontail Capers was written in 2009 at the request of marimbist and xylophonist Yurika Kimura, to whom it is dedicated with admiration and playful affection. The premiere performance was given by Ms. Kimura on November 20, 2009 at the Ogaki Concert Hall in Gifu, Japan.
