Ching was composed in August 2002 for the percussion group, NEXUS. It is dedicated to John Wyre, upon the occasion of his departure from NEXUS after 31 years.
The piece is scored for five pair of small Chinese cymbals called, ‘ching’, and five small Japanese Buddha bells. The instruments are scored in order of pitch, from the highest sounding to the lowest sounding. It is in the interplay of pitches and sound production techniques, as well as in rhythm, that the music is developed.
